Some women had good cause to dislike the pub and its alcohol because it not only deprived them of their fathers and husbands, but also caused the men to spend money needed for food, and it could make a man angry and violent. Those women who drank therefore deserved and received little sympathy from those who believed in moderation. Drunkenness was almost a daily occurrence in the villages, according to the older inhabitants, and its evils could therefore be witnessed often. Moderate drinkers, both men and women, could be misjudged by those whose principles kept them out of the pubs, and the creative activities connected with the pub, like singing and dancing, were overshadowed by the more conspicuous and destructive events like fights and brawls.

Priscilla Savage, a woman with principles about alcohol, had positive reasons for keeping away from pubs: she liked her home and children: ‘The pub don’t interest me, you see, dear. I’d rather go down to the chapel and hear the children say their pieces, I love to hear the children say their pieces.’55 Men, also, could share such feelings, as James Smith describes:

I was there in the Key one Saturday night, and all the children were being bathed at home, and I was drinking my pint, and they’re playing darts, so I drank my pint and off I went, say ‘I’m agoing,’ stay home and help mother, so I got off it Saturday nights after a time, you see. Well, you see, there’s more comfort at home than where the darts team is, isn’t there?56
